How to Get Your First 100 Subscribers (Without Spending a Shilling)

When I started Sautiyapesa, I had zero subscribers. Zero followers. Zero budget.

Today, I have over 100 people who get my emails — and it cost me Ksh 0.

Here’s exactly how I did it — step by step.

Step 1: Offer Something Valuable (Free)

I created a simple PDF: “5 Hustle Hacks I Wish I Knew at 20.”

No fancy design. Just Google Docs → Export as PDF.

I offered it in exchange for email signup — right on my blog.

Step 2: Share It Where Your People Are

I didn’t spam Facebook groups. I didn’t buy ads.

I shared it in 3 places:

• WhatsApp Status: “Free PDF for hustlers — link in bio.”
• Twitter Thread: “Here’s how I made my first Ksh 50K → Free guide for you.”
• 1 Facebook Group: Posted in “Kenya Side Hustle Ideas” with value-first caption.

Step 3: Ask Friends to Share (The “5 Friends” Rule)

I messaged 5 friends: “Hey, I made this thing. If you know anyone who’d find it useful, please share.”

3 of them shared it. That’s how I got my first 47 subscribers.

Step 4: Deliver Value — Then Ask for Shares

My first email wasn’t a sales pitch. It was a thank-you + 1 extra tip.

At the end, I wrote: “If this helped you, please forward it to one friend.”

12 people forwarded it. Got 23 new subscribers.

Step 5: Repeat — But Better

Now I do this every week:

1. Write 1 honest blog post
2. Turn key points into a free PDF/checklist
3. Share it in 2–3 places
4. Ask 5 friends to share
5. Send thank-you email + ask for forwards

Total cost: Ksh 0. Total time: 3–4 hours/week.

You don’t need money. You need consistency + generosity.
