I Got My First Ksh 100… by Giving Away a Free Phone Number

July 12, 2025

I didn’t charge anyone. I didn’t sell anything. I didn’t even ask for money.

I just gave out my WhatsApp number — for free.

In Kenya, your phone number is more valuable than your logo.

Because when you give it away — you give your time. And time? That’s the only currency no one can steal.

Here’s how it happened:

I Posted My Number on One Facebook Group

Last Tuesday, I joined a small Facebook group called “Small Business Owners in Nairobi.”

I saw someone asking: “Who can help me design a flyer for my kiosk?”

I didn’t reply with a price. I didn’t say “DM me.”

I just wrote:

“I help people like you get clients without cold calling. If you want me to review your business idea — message me here: +254 745 167 489 No charge. Just helping.”

I hit send. Then I closed the app.

Three hours later — I got a message:

“Hi. I’m Mama Lucy. I sell chapati near Uhuru Park. Can you tell me how to get more customers?”

I spent 12 minutes talking to her. I told her: - Take a photo of her chapati stack - Post it on WhatsApp Status with: “Fresh chapati, 30% off today!” - Ask 3 friends to share it

She said thank you. Then she sent me Ksh 100.

I didn’t ask for it. She just wanted to say thanks.

You Don’t Need to Be an Expert. You Just Need to Care.

You think you need to know everything before you help someone.

You don’t.

You just need to:

Mama Lucy didn’t pay me because I was a designer. She paid me because I took 12 minutes to care.

That’s worth more than any course. More than any website. More than any ad.

Your Next Move: Give Away Your Number — For Free

You don’t need money to do this. You just need 5 minutes.

  1. Find one small group — Facebook, WhatsApp, Telegram — where people ask for help.
  2. Look for a question — “Who can help me with…” or “I need advice on…”
  3. Reply with your number — no pitch, no price. Just: “Message me here: +254 745 167 489. I’ll help you for free.”
  4. Wait. Don’t follow up. Don’t push.
  5. When they message you — listen. Answer like a friend. Even if it’s just 5 minutes.
  6. Let them decide to pay. They might send Ksh 100. Or Ksh 500. Or nothing. Either way — you win.

Why?

Because you didn’t sell. You showed up.

And in Kenya — showing up is the most powerful thing you can do.

This isn’t marketing. It’s kindness with purpose.

You don’t need to be rich to help someone. You just need to be real.

So here’s your challenge this week:

Give away your WhatsApp number — once — for free.

Don’t ask for payment. Don’t say “I do flyers.” Don’t mention your blog.

Just say: “Message me here: +254 745 167 489. I’ll help you.”

Then wait.

Someone will reply.

And you’ll realize — you didn’t need money to start. You just needed to show up.

Ksh 100 isn’t much. But it’s proof.

Proof that your voice matters. Proof that your time has value. Proof that you don’t need a website to change someone’s day.
