Raila Odinga (1945–2025): A Life of Courage, Conviction, and Kenya

On October 19, 2025, Kenya laid to rest one of its most consequential sons: Raila Amolo Odinga — democracy champion, former Prime Minister, and unwavering voice for the people. He was 80.

A Life of Service

The Final Journey Home

After his passing, Raila’s body was flown to Nairobi, where thousands gathered in grief. Tragically, at least five people died and hundreds were injured in stampedes during public viewings — a testament to the deep love Kenyans held for “Baba.”

On Sunday, October 19, a state funeral was held at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga University of Science and Technology. President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, and dignitaries from across Africa paid their respects.

As his casket — draped in the Kenyan flag — was lowered into the earth, military trumpets played the Last Post. His son, Raila Junior, said: “Now finally Baba is home.”

Why He Mattered

Raila never became president — but his impact ran deeper than office.

“Raila was not just a Kenyan dignitary… he was respected across the continent and even beyond.”

A Legacy That Lives On

In a nation often divided, Raila Odinga stood for something rare: principled opposition. He challenged power — not for personal gain, but for the people.

His death leaves a void. But his life leaves a blueprint: Stand for truth. Fight for justice. Never stop believing in Kenya.

Rest in power, Baba. Your work echoes in every Kenyan who dares to demand better.
