I used to think I had to have all the answers.
I thought if I didn’t know how to scale, how to grow, how to monetize — I wasn’t worthy.
I thought if I said, “I don’t know,” I’d lose credibility.
So I pretended.
I’d smile and nod when someone asked me, “How do I get my first Ksh 10,000?”
I’d quote tips I’d read online.
I’d say, “Just be consistent.”
But inside? I was scared.
I didn’t know how to do it myself.
Then one day, a woman messaged me on WhatsApp:
“Abdulla, I tried your advice. I did everything you said. I posted. I DM’d. I shared. I even gave away my last Ksh 500. And still — nothing. I’m tired. I’m broke. I don’t know what else to do. Are you sure this works?”
I stared at that message for 17 minutes.
I didn’t reply with a tip.
I didn’t send a link.
I didn’t tell her to keep going.
I typed:
“I don’t know if it works for you. I don’t know what you should do next. I’m still figuring it out too. But I’m here. And I’m not leaving.”
That was the first time I told the truth.
And then… she replied:
“Thank you. I needed to hear that. I thought I was the only one failing.”
That’s when I realized:
People don’t need experts.
They need witnesses.
They don’t want someone who has it all figured out.
They want someone who says:
“I’m still trying. I’m still broken. But I’m here. With you.”
Since then, I’ve stopped pretending.
I stopped saying “just do this.”
I started saying:
And guess what?
More people started replying.
More people started sharing.
More people started saying:
“You’re the only one who doesn’t sound like a guru. You sound like me.”
You don’t need to have the answers.
You just need to show up — raw, real, and willing to say:
“I don’t know.”
Because when you do — you give someone permission to say it too.
And that’s how movements start.
