The 3 Lies Kenyan Entrepreneurs Believe (And How They’re Holding You Back)

June 28, 2025

You’re working hard. You’re hustling. But something’s not clicking.

Here’s why: You’ve been lied to.

Lie #1: “You Need Money to Start”

“I can’t start until I save Ksh 50,000.” “I need a laptop first.” “I’ll wait until I have capital.”

Truth: Start with Ksh 0

I started with a phone, WhatsApp, and Ksh 0. My first “product” was advice — given for free. My first “client” paid me Ksh 500 for a flyer. I reinvested it. Now I make Ksh 50,000/month.

You don’t need money. You need a problem to solve — and someone willing to pay for the solution.

Lie #2: “You Need to Be an Expert”

“Who am I to teach?” “I haven’t made millions.” “I’m not qualified.”

Truth: You’re Ahead of Someone

You don’t need to be the best. You just need to be ahead of someone. I taught Canva to a salon owner — I’d only used it for 3 days. She paid me Ksh 1,500. You know more than someone — share it.

Lie #3: “It Has to Be Perfect”

“I’ll launch when it’s ready.” “I need a logo, website, business plan first.”

Truth: Perfect is the Enemy of Profit

I launched Sautiyapesa with a free blog, no logo, no “branding.” I got my first 100 subscribers in 2 weeks. If I’d waited for “perfect,” I’d still be waiting.

Done is better than perfect. Profit is better than polish.

Stop believing the lies. Start building the truth.

What’s one lie you believed — and how did you break free?
